Time Travelling into the Roman Age
ArchaeoTrails released for Frankfurt am Main
Two new ArchaeoTrails just got released – they are guiding through the Roman heritage of Frankfurt am Main.
Authors of the Frankfurt Trail
PD Dr. Marion Bolder-Boos launched the project as a course with students from the TU Darmstadt, who made the first drafts for the trails. Dr. Peter Fasold, expert for Roman Archaeology, joined the team to revise the texts. Elke Sichert M.A. from the Frankfurt Antiquities and Monuments Office designed the graphics and implemented the trails in the App Portal.
The Frankfurt Trails
On October 30th, the team presented its first two trails through the Roman city of NIDA, which lies beneath the modern quarters of Frankfurt-Praunheim and Frankfurt-Heddernheim. One trail offers a complete tour through NIDA (5,1 km, 30 stations), the other offers a shorter insight into Roman city life in NIDA (3 km, 16 stations).
The trails start in Frankfurt-Heddernheim at the tube- and bus station “Römerstadt” and end in Frankfurt-Praunheim at the bus station “Graebestraße/Pflegeheim”, so hikers can easily arrive via public transport.
Showing the Invisible
Like all ArchaeoTrails, the two trails provide free self-guided tours at any time.
What makes these two tours through Frankfurt special is that they allow visitors to walk through archaeological sites which are usually invisible, since there are hardly any Roman ruins preserved above ground. The ArchaeoTrails with their rich presentation of photos and videos fill that void and enable a deep dive into the Roman Age.
